We tried to do a job description that you could get through Elainely fast, but our CEO realised Sh’can’t… this is why she needs you to help make things more efficient :(

About Us

Rebel Women Lit started as a private book club and has since evolved into a public literary community. We’re on a mission to build a (badass) resilient community of readers & storytellers who use literature as a form of radical self-care and political resilience. We may be biased — but we’re pretty sure we are the coolest place to work for, ever. And we really believe that we can change the world (you will see what we mean when you get here).

About the Job

Honestly, the job is not all flowers and pretty bookmarks — there’s good news and there’s bad news.

Let’s get the bad news out of the way first:

1. The pay sucks. Meaning, you won’t get rich at this job. The pay is $270/month and you’ll be working about 16-22 hours a month. It can be some extra spending money, for sure. However, if you are seeking a job to support a household then this is no longer the ”coolest” part-time admin job ever, it is now the “suckiest” part-time admin job ever.

2. Review the first point.

Now let’s talk about the good stuff:

1. The work is fun, fresh and dynamic. You will be working directly for our CEO (Jherane) and helping her with a mix of projects for the RWL store, membership program, podcasts, and magazine.

2. You get to help shape a lot of the RWL experience with our readers, clients, writers, and other teammates. We have some systems in place, and you get to help make everything happen on time, predictably, and beautifully.

3. We aren’t big on stress. So, while we will expect you to work efficiently and get things done, we focus on radical honesty, centering empathy, and getting things done the best way we can.

4. The hours are super flexible. We will work with your schedule to get a routine that works for you. One long day a week best for you? No problem. Rather work mid morning until mid-afternoon? Cool, we can do that too. You just need to design a reliable schedule that gets your tasks done well and keeps the team operating smoothly.

5. You will experience things, do things, and make decisions on things that no big stuffy company would ever allow you to do. We’re very metrics-driven, and our (sacred) respect for data & systems means you’ll quickly be able to make big decisions without fear and with the team’s support.

6. You don’t need to be a big reader to apply, but chances are you’ll fall in love with stories soon after working at Rebel Women Lit. But don’t worry about your reading habits too much, we have a massive community library you can indulge in, a budding members only digital library, and you’ll get an employee discount to our bookstore.

Now, let’s talk about the job requirements:

1. You need to be the type of person who gets joy out of getting things done. Every workday, you will bang out a list of stuff. Fun stuff. Important stuff. Necessary stuff. You’ll organize/monitor emails for the CEO in a system you’ve designed for addressing important emails and flagging next steps. You’ll manage the CEO’s travel arrangements and calendar (including making sure all associated Hangouts/Zoom links, and technology are prepped). And you’ll also do a frequent review of our CEO’s to-do list and take the fluff off her plate. This will ensure that our CEO is making the best use of her time (like focusing on making more money to hire you full-time!).

2. You’ll assist with managing our part-time exec team’s calendars, coordinate schedules, plan appointments, and proactively ensure efficient use of time. You’ll identify small admin tasks in their roles and help to remove them from their plate. You’ll assemble data/reports on the exec’s progress for the CEO to review on a weekly basis.

3. You will be on the phone a lot. So, you need to enjoy talking with people and giving/getting direction. (Our CEO hates following up with phone calls and emails, and her introversion can lowkey dampen our brand 😪 So this is where you come in with your superhero cape 🦸🏾‍♀️ )

4. You need to be a person who loves to deliver remarkable experiences to other people. You know, you need to be someone who feels good by making other people feel good. We’re big romantics at RWL (think fresh flowers, hand-written thank you notes, morning check-ins, and rosewood candles on a random Tuesday in the office), and we need everyone on the team to not only “get it”, but to also extend the feeling of “everyday luxury” in all our experiences. Internal and external.

5. You NEED to nail down the details. You don’t need to race through work and get things done half-assed because you keep looking at the big picture (our CEO figured this one out on her own). We need you to slow things down and get them done right.

6. We want you to be meticulous in your work. We are looking for a good, fun person, who gets shit done. (Oh and we occasionally swear on internal Google Hangouts calls…not much…but sometimes a joke is only funny with an F-bomb, hope that’s ok?).

In short, your job is to help Jherane in any way you can so she can focus on creating new things to help others.

Who Are You?

I’m that friend that does a PowerPoint presentation and Excel spreadsheet when we’re planning a group trip
I am a reliable team player capable of both flexing and refining
I have deep domain knowledge of RWL
I have an "ownership mindset."
I have a proven track record of excellent judgment, discretion, and integrity
I am willing to give and receive constructive feedback and hold people accountable while naturally maintaining strong professional relationships

EnFin…

RWL is casual, but we do expect professionalism and punctuality. What we don’t expect is perfection. We’re a young company so we will fail at many things, but we practice failing with grace, speed, and the radical honesty needed to get back up and try something else. We expect intelligence, energy, and a get it done attitude. When you have questions, you will find the answers with a quick telegram message, but you also know Google and YouTube is a great friend for independent learning.

If this is a job that gets you so excited that you would even do it for free, we would totally accept that offer from you. But my lawyer and I would much prefer compensating you if this isn’t purely a learning experience for you (and we totally get it…we totally prefer getting paid as well! LOL). This is what we offer: This is a part-time, admin job. The pay is $270/month for about 16-22 hours and we’ll cover your phone bill. You may sometimes be required to come into the office and we will decide on that (sorry, but this is not a 100% virtual job).

In addition to being a detailed person, you must follow systems and processes. In fact, just to prove that you are detailed oriented and can follow procedures when you apply for this position mention in the body of the email the tool (analogue or digital) that you first grab for when you need to organise your thoughts. Yep, that’s our little trick to sort out the people who blanket send their resume to anyone and everyone, from the folks (that’s you) who are truly interested in this position. We are looking to bring our new colleague on board as soon as possible, but we will spend the necessary time to find the best fit both in abilities and culturally. One thing that will give you a BIG leg up (but is optional) is to send a quick video in along with your resume instead of a cover letter (in fact, everyone who works here did this). In your video tell us why you think you’re perfect for this job and why you will rock this position. This is purely for us to get a sense of your personality. And if you decide not to send a video (that’s ok!), please tell us why you chose not to send in a video.

We can’t wait to meet you!
