Introduction
If you’ve read the Stars And The Blackness Between Them you would have experienced one of the sweetest, warmest, and most beautiful stories ever written without a doubt. There are so many layers to this novel that I could write about for years and never run out of things to say. One of the layers of the novel is Zodiac Astrology. This is one of the first books that I’ve seen that goes beyond the sun sign of a person, or inaccurate horoscopes given in the newspapers and magazines. Astrology lovers will be in awe of this book. Non-astrology lovers will also have a wonderful experience but the Astrology parts might go over their heads. As I said the book has multiple layers so I’m just going to be focusing on the astrology parts.
Each section is divided into the 12 Zodiac Astrology signs. Each sign is also given its own poem, and the chapters embody the characteristics of each Astrology sign.
For the poetry and chapters Juaunda references the traits, the plant and sometimes the god associated with the planet, the signs element, the symbol associated with the sign, the season the sign is in, and the signs modality. Juaunda also synchronises main belief systems/mythologies and cultural practises with Western Astrology. As Queenie says, ‘there’s spirit everywhere’.
Zodiac Overview
There are 12 signs and each sign is divided into 4 elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. They all share general characteristics. They all go through that order in the zodiac calendar very much like Avatar: Last Airbender cycle (though the order is different).
The Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are associated with being emotional, intuitive, empathetic, passionate, and creative. They tend to seek the deeper meaning of things and are more led by feelings than logic .The Air signs (Libra, Aquarius, Gemini),are associated with being free spirits, social, intellectual, curious, and communicative. The Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn) are associated with being grounded, practical, stubborn, reserved, and secure. The Fire signs (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius) are associated with energised, competitive, passionate, driven, and adventure (Cups & Crowns, 2018).
The elements are further grouped into their position in each season: Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) start each season, spring, summer, fall, winter and they are known for taking initiative. Fixed signs (Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius, Taurus) fall in the middle of the season and are able to hold steady in their beliefs and are known for being stubborn. Mutable signs (Sagittarius, Pisces, Gemini, Virgo) are more adaptable and restless for change and they’re also great communicators (The Four Elements and Three Modalities | Cosmic Navigator, 2020).
Cancer
Symbol: Crab
Element: Water
Modality: Cardinal
Planet: Moon,
Period: June 20 - July 22
Traits: emotional, sensitive, family oriented, protective, passive-aggressive(#ASTR1004! Pt2, 2020), (Rae, 2017)
Poem
Cancer, being a water sign, made Junauda do something beautiful in this poem by starting it with Yemaya the Yoruba goddess of the sea. The poem goes into detail describing characteristics of Yemaya as protective are also qualities of Cancer. Cancer is also ruled by the moon another reason Yemaya was a perfect choice for representing cancer since the introductory poem mentions controlling tides which is associated with the moon. She also goes into the nurturing qualities of Cancer through Yemeya ‘protect softness’ ‘healing waters’ ‘intuitive lover’ (PETRUS, 2020).
In the second to last stanza she makes reference to the crab symbol; “she protects softness she a shelled thing that scamper away and hide and protect” (PETRUS, 2020). The line also references the protective qualities of the Cancer sign.
Chapter
The chapter deals with a lot of strong intense emotions true to the Cancer season. It opens up with sadness because Audre will have to move to America away from her girlfriend. Then it goes with Mabel’s feelings questioning her sexuality and recalls the brief encounter she has with a girl but the impact was lasting, It also goes into deal with the romance between Audre’s first girlfriend, Neri. The Cancer influence is also seen in the intense anger Mabel’s mother reacted with when she caught them intimately together.
The chapter also showed the family relationships in both Audre and Mabel’s family: Audre and her mother, her cousin, and Queenie, Mabel’s relationship with her parents. Cancer is a very family-oriented sign.
You can also note the water imagery, which is the sign associated with Cancer, at the C.H.U.R.C.H. and how important it was to be at the sea. “Queenieland was Yemeya, the ocean, the goddess of me and Neri’s C.H.U.R.C.H.” (PETRUS, 2020) The perfume she got for Neri called ‘Ocean Love’.
Leo
Symbol: Lion
Element: Fire
Modality: Fixed
Planet: Sun
Period: June 20 - July 22
Traits: egocentric, charismatic, confident, warm, insecure, blunt, determination, likeable, easy going, independent (#ASTR1004! Pt2, 2020), (Rae, 2017)
Poem
The poem makes reference to the lion symbol of Leo and also their ‘center of attention’ nature in the first stanza “you that cool cat who bought the three-piece suit off layaway and wore the alligator Stacy Adams to the club so we could bask in you a yearning to be in the care of your arms the protection of your pride” (PETRUS, 2020). She also makes reference to the Egyptian goddess Bastet, who was originally portrayed as a lioness warrior goddess of the sun (Bastet, 2020). Not only is this referencing Leo’s symbol and planet but also their feeling of self importance. Since Leo is ruled by the sun they usually end up being the center of attention either instinctively or coincidentally.
The line ‘You make the dapper divine’ refers to how Leo’s are concerned with how they look and their outward appearances (PETRUS, 2020).
‘A lioness sunflower full of seeds and heat’ is a reference to Leo being in the season of summer (PETRUS, 2020).
Chapter
The chapter started out with Mabel’s insecurities of her body’s strength, not being able to finish her strength workout. She also compares herself to her friend, Ursa, who posted a video of her doing push-ups. Although Leo is a sign associated with being bold they have well hidden insecurities.
Through Mabel’s eyes Audre has a lot of the Leo traits. She’s very bold and unapologetic about herself and her feelings. She starts cursing off her step dad and telling Mabel how much she hates America. Leos are also preoccupied with showcasing their strength and have difficulty opening up because they do not want to appear weak. Audre tries to portray strength to hide how much the move to America had hurt her. Mabel also has a childhood memory when Audre ate so many raspberries and got sick but wasn’t embarrassed instead she smiled and said she would do it all again showing the fun fire spirit of Leos. The bold Leo energy is also seen through Mabel’s mom who’s described as being very comfortable in her body wearing ‘pum-pum shorts’.
Leo’s warm and friendly traits are shown here where Mabel offers to cook with her since her father fails at this and to help with her homesickness. Showing people that they care about them by trying to solve their problems or gift giving is a trait of the Leo sign.
Virgo
Symbol: Maiden/Virgin
Element: Earth
Modality: Mutable
Planet: Mercury
Period: August 22 - September 21
Traits: Hard-working, Attention to detail, Critical of the world, Working through tough situations ,Eye for detail, Problem solving in solution in a practical sense, wisdom (#ASTR1004! Pt2, 2020), (Rae, 2017).
Poem
Lines 2-3 in the first stanza of the poem, “the meticulousness of magic the healing in the flowers and herbs” and “wisdom moving through the pathways of the body the brother who pays attention to every twitch” refers to attention to detail nature of Virgos (PETRUS, 2020).
The lines “the grains of life, the harvesting of perfection the healer and the need to heal i unlayer the layers. the wheat, the chaff, the stem the harvest brings forth the elements” is a reference to the Maiden symbol behind Virgo which is linked to fertility and harvest along with the lines “she sugarcane fields and unemployment lines she bussing yam to fufu” (PETRUS, 2020).
The lines “she tap-dancing what the drums used to say toiling ’cause she understand the inherent” ‘the toiling and the work” refers to the hardworking nature of Virgos
The poem also makes reference to a famous Virgo, Micheal Jackson with a dance he’s known for ie moonwalking in the line “and he moonwalking like a seed underground to freedom” (PETRUS, 2020).
Chapter
Junauda brings back the working the field imagery mentioned in the poem when Ursa and Mabel are working in the Black Eden, her dad’s garden and also making jokes pretending to be slaves working the field until Mabel’s dad shuts it down saying how “Black folks should know how to grow our own food, even if the white man done made us associate being with the land with being slaves. Our ancestors lived with the land and grew their own medicine and food…” which goes back into the hard work and practical nature of the Virgo sign while also referencing the earth element of Virgo.
Audre’s focus on her survival goal attitude in this chapter also exuberates Virgos energy despite the overwhelming culture shock she’s going through at a new high school she’s determined to be alright.“I’ll be okay….I ain’t here to make friends, anyway...I is here for me studies and to get to know my father. If I can get good grades and behave myself, hopefully my mother will let me come back.” Virgo’s are very focused sign, they might struggle with self doubt and procrastinate but they will get things done. This is also in reference to Virgo’s modality being mutable in that they are adaptable to changes. (PETRUS, 2020).
Libra
Symbol: Scales
Element: Air
Modality: Cardinal
Planet: Venus
Period: September 22 - October 22
Traits: Charming, neutral, see things from multiple sides, mediators, Indecisive, mediators, flaky, avoid confrontation (#ASTR1004! Pt2, 2020), (Rae, 2017).
Poem
There’s reference to the autumn season that Libra falls in in the first four lines “the leaves were raked up by an older cousin for us to dive into and the impact was crunchy yet soft somehow she gathered the splendor of changing leaves rustling breeze and flamboyant descents” (PETRUS, 2020).
The lines “hands at harmony with the heart reminds us to be slow, decadent working and toiling yields for balance” references the symbol of the scale, which is for balance and also the Libra’s traits for being good mediators. The line also refers to the features of the ruling planet Venus which is indulgence “decadent working and toiling yields for balance” (PETRUS, 2020).
Chapter
This was the perfect chapter to introduce Afua. Libra is the sign that is about balancing the scales and justice and seeing multiple sides of a story. Society often has a one dimensional view of prisoners as being inherently bad and therefore deserving of punishment. Juanuda brings Afua to ‘balance the scale’ by challenging how we view prisoners and the entire justice system through Afua’s story.
Scorpio
Symbol: Scorpion
Element: Water
Modality: Fixed
Planet: Pluto, Mars
Period: October 22 - November 21
Traits: Strange detachment to the rest of humanity, Lonely, Fascination with th occult, Unapproachable, Complex, Reserve quiet, Misunderstood, Secretive, Passionate, Feel intensely, No bull shit, Independent, Sexual (#ASTR1004! Pt2, 2020), (Rae, 2017).
Poem
The poem deals with sexual violence, abuse and death that ensalved people went through. Scorpio elements are used in this poem since it is the sign that is associated with sex, and rebirth. Scorpio planets are Pluto the god of the underworld and Mars the god of war. Even though it is a sign of rebirth Scorpio doesn’t change easily because of its Fixed modality and its ruling planets (Rattana, 1999)
The line “secrets and shames of my daddy’s DNA” is a reference to the secretive/private nature associated with the Scorpio sign. (PETRUS, 2020).
The line “my mama’s womb is encrusted in rubies” the rubby references one of the planetary stones of Scorpio, ruby (PETRUS, 2020).
The line “a sacred death is the climax of life and all death is rebirth’” is in reference to the Pluto god of the underworld and also Scorpio being the sign of regenerating, (PETRUS, 2020).
The line “they jumped middle passage to immigrate underwater and accumulate wisdom from deep-sea sages wise in liquid intelligence when to flow, float, and sink” not only does this reference death but also the water imagery is a reference to Scorpio’s water sign.
The line “i went underground i grew an armor to protect my secrets and inner delicate” is a reference to the scorpion symbol and Scorpio's private nature and their need to protect their emotions. (PETRUS, 2020).
Chapter
In this chapter, Afua goes into detail about his spirituality. Scorpio and water signs in general are into spirituality and the occult.“Among the books sent to me were two astrology books of James’s as well as other spiritual books. He had read and dog-eared all of them. I opened up the astrology book and saw his notes and underlines and started to cry. It was like he was there reading the books with me. I read and reread the astrology books. I memorized each sign, its element, and ruling planets. I studied the characteristics of each sign and what each symbolized. I learned how to make charts. One of the books had a chart for all of the movements of these planets and where they would be until the year 2050, which gave me hope that maybe I could be around that long too.” The chapter also shows the intimacy between James and Afua which is a quality associated with Water signs (PETRUS, 2020).
Scorpios are more protective of their emotions than the other water signs. We can see this being played out with Mabel strong brooding on her birthday, which was very guarded in front of her friends but there was still a sense of unapproachable energy she gave off to her friends. Scorpios struggle with asking for help or expressing their emotions out of fear of being rejected or misunderstood because of their feeling of distance they feel from other people and feel lonely because of this. She eventually releases her emotional burdens when she cries to her mother who came to comfort her after she left the party to go to her room which also goes back to the theme of intimacy in Water signs.
Sagittarius
Symbol: Archer
Element: Fire
Modality: Mutable
Planet: Jupiter
Period: November 21- December 20
Traits: Knowledge seekers, lucky, understanding, growth, merrymaking and freedom, adventurous, positive (#ASTR1004! Pt2, 2020), (Rae, 2017).
Poem
The poetry is about black people wanting to break free from an oppressive system and seeking truth about the past. Confidence is associated with the Sagittarius sign; knowing who they are and what they deserve. This is seen in the line “hood blocks are auction blocks he took the noose off his own neck he knew he deserved a gold chain and a Jupiter ring” (PETRUS, 2020)
Also knowledge seeking is also associated with Sagittarius and their Cardinal modality. Juaunda shows this in the lines “b-boy philosophers tenure on the corner on blocks ghetto institutions of knowledge local community college writing notes in his head and back pocket notebooks” and also the line “hunter of the mind” which also references the Sagittarius archer symbol and Cardinal modality (PETRUS, 2020).
The fire imagery, which is the Sagittarius element, is seen in the line “let the fire become lava and it will create lands for Eden” (PETRUS, 2020).
Chapter
This was probably one of the most positive and happy chapters and this is because Sagittarius is one of the most positive signs to be around. This chapter we find out Afua is still alive and wrote to Mabel. We also learn about Queenie’s relationship with Mahal. This is also the first time Audre has seen snow and goes sledding which is the adventure spirit of Sagittarius.
The chapter also goes into detail of Queenie’s life in her twenties and her dream for travel and adventure associated with the Sagittarius sign and Cardinal modality and the process of making her move from Trinidad to America. “ I think they knew he was the only reason I ain’t travel the world. My mommy say, she knew I always have a spirit that want to travel, since I a little girl. I would look in my tantie’s National Geographic and seeing’ all kinds of places and I want to feel how other worlds feel like. I is want to ride camels and play by the pyramids, I is wanting to go to China and walk all a the Great Wall and eat duck. When I little, I is dreaming of going skiing in Switzerland zooming down them mountains, boy.” (PETRUS, 2020).
The chapter goes back into the positive vibe when Mahal took Queenie out on her birthday. And it transitions to Audre telling Mabel about Carnival which is a festival that brings all the positive vibes, energy and freedom associated with Sagittarius.
Capricorn
Symbol : Sea-Goat
Element: Earth
Modality: Cardinal
Ruling planet: Saturn
Period: December 21- January 19
Traits: Realistic, rational, conservative, solid, down to earth, skeptical, logical, stubborn, smart, ambitious, independent, hard on themselves, stoic (#ASTR1004! Pt2, 2020), (Rae, 2017).
Poem
The theme of the poem is the resilience and resourcefulness of the Capricorn energy. It shows these themes through Capricorn’s earth element “the crone got all silver teeth and she use mud to make her home the pretty red dirt is her makeup and her chewing gum” (PETRUS, 2020). There’s a reference to Jab-Jab which brings the theme of resistance well. Jab-Jab is a tradition in Grenada carnival masquerade where persons dress themselves in black and honour the enslaved who were in shackles and also a form of protest for the current shackles we have in life (Harrad and Millns, 2017) “the greatest one of all was a fury of dance and jabs in honor of those shackled and beaten he fought for them and giggled while doing it it was a joy” (PETRUS, 2020).The Jab-Jab the masqueraders sometimes wear horns which you can draw likeness to the horns of the sea-goat of the Capricorn sign. Another reference to the sea-goat is “we crossed oceans and we built and we remained and embedded under every new civilization is an earth that never forgets” (PETRUS, 2020).
Chapter
The Capricorn themes of this chapter came in the form of the ruling planet of Saturn which is the planet of life lessons, restrictions and challenges which will come with being a Capricorn (Rae, 2018). Afua contemplates his life when Sakeem, a prison inmate disappears without a trace. He finds himself going through the fears that he has to cope with and he does so through spirituality; learning about past-lives and meditation techniques. He also remembers his past life where he was also imprisoned. Therefore this chapter is about different life challenges in both his past and current life.
Aquarius
Symbol: Water-Bearer
Element: Air
Modality: Fixed
Planet: Uranus
Period: January 19- February 19
Traits: humanitarians, servitude, kind and generous, charity, activism, unique, awkward, strange, true to themselves, truth seekers, non-judgemental, independent thinkers, (#ASTR1004! Pt2, 2020), (Rae, 2017).
Poem
The poetry is in reference to the Water-bearer symbol of Aquarius . The water-bearer sign symbolises the ability to carry emotions for others without being influenced by those emotions
“holding the expanse of emotions the emotions of seas, the depth of oceans” “hold it all without succumbing to the heavy of the feelings.” (PETRUS, 2020).
The poem is also in reference to the intellectual revolutionary and humanitarian traits of the sign which can be seen in the lines “the wisdom of the future unfolding in multidimensional visions in woke third eyes” and “she the old lady sage from other worlds, the precision of restraint and the limitlessness of cosmic intuition” (PETRUS, 2020)..
Chapter
The chapter starts with Aurde and Jazzy who invites her to the LGBTQIA organisation which is about advocating and inclusivity in their schools which fits into the Aquarius humanitarian theme.
Audre and Jazzy open up to each other in this chapter: Jazzy opens up with her relationship with Ursa and with her family to Audre. In return Audre finally opens up about the reason her mother made her move in with her father, how much she misses Trinidad, and her misplaced guilt; believing her bad luck caused Mabel’s disease. Jazzy provides a non-judgemental shoulder crying which is in the spirit of the Aquarius sign.
The chapter also reveals Mabel’s wish from the ‘Life Wish’ organisation is for Afua to be released on death row which embodies the Aquarius humanitarian trait.
Pisces

Planet: Neptune

Traits: sensitive, intuitive, empathetic, dreamers, artistic, desire to escape reality, undiscerning, whimsical, clingy, compassionate (#ASTR1004! Pt2, 2020), (Rae, 2017).
Poem
Instantly Junauda makes reference to the pisces fish symbol and planet Neptune (named after the Roman god of fresh water and sea) in the first stanza: “nobody knows how to swim that deep you got to be born there gills fastened to your ribs in the watery placenta of Neptune” (PETRUS, 2020).
Makes reference to Pisces being escapers, daydreamers and whimsical in the line “you only dream when you are awake ” (PETRUS, 2020).
Pisces' nature of being intuitive and their Water element and fish symbol is made reference to in the lines “everything so ancient it is happening in the future when an ancestor is coming back to the earth old ladies dream of fish swimming through lakes of remember and forget” (PETRUS, 2020).
Some astrologers believe that Pisces placements are more likely to be from reincarnated souls and that they have a connection to the other side (Rae, 2018). We can see this with the reincarnation reference in the last stanza “when an ancestor is coming back to the earth old ladies dream of fish swimming through lakes of remember and forget then they catch the babies like fisherwomen on the starlit sea of Sankofa” (PETRUS, 2020).
Chapter
In this chapter the Pisces energy comes out when Audre finally opens up to Mabel as to the real reason she’s here which deepens their connection.
The Pisces energy also comes out when we see Jazzy and Audre crying about Mabel and then taking on Mabel’s pain and struggles and helping her out by planning a protest so that they can help Mabel get Afua out. Pisces is a very empathetic sign and will go all out to help their friends.
Aries

Poem
There are many spring references in the poem, this is because Aries is the sign that starts the Zodiac calendar: “spring Ram child of the new leaves, beginnings and daybreaks.” “i am the first green bud within the seeming never-ending frost” (PETRUS, 2020).
The poem also goes into the Aries traits of aggression, confrontation and their Cardinal modality which is about initiative in the lines “seeking sun is the desire to erupt. a break into life, a possibility for lushness and becoming. the pop off, the sho nuff, the hotheaded uncle black knight. skin filled of fight” and ‘i am the hot block the corner of action of possibility of tricksters of fools” (PETRUS, 2020).
Chapter
The chapter immediately starts with Queenie talking about a fight. How fast Juandua goes into the Aries characteristics in this story also symbolizes Aries fast-pace nature and their Cardinal modality. Queenie fights a bully, Earl, that picks on her friend Cornelius because he has more ‘feminine’ traits. She’s not only willing to fight Earl to defend her friend but because Earl has also been telling lies that he slept with Queenie. Aries is known for being one of the most aggressive and physical signs out of the Zodiac.
The chapter also introduces Queenie’s grandma who has Aries’ free-spirited energy to her. She’s also being more self-focused because she’s been doing things for other ppl her entire life and now wants to focus on herself.
We also see a different side of Audre’s mother when she was younger and displayed Aries traits such as how she always stood-out, pretty and strong, smart and intense.
Taurus
Symbol: Bull
Element: Earth

Planet: Venus
Period: April 19 - May 20

Poem
There are many references to the earth element as well as the bull symbol of Tarus through the nature references in lines such as “the Black girls crave dirt to chew taking commune from the soil sucking and chewing the minerals out the land” “the goddess crowned of horns”
There are also references to Taurus ruling planet Venus (the goddess of love and indulgence) and also Taurus trait of relaxation in the lines “they was birthed from the mother of sweetness of honey and cinnamon and rose and rivers of sugarcane juice to drink” and “they lay down on the earth and its night they lay hands on they own throat singing’ rock steady to the stars and it was church on clay and patience and they welcomed the stillness’
Chapter
Main traits of Taurus seen in this chapter were life indulgence and comfort which is a main trait of their ruling planet Venus. Mabel and Audre went away with their closest friends to a cabin owned by Mabel’s family friend to thank them for the protest. They enjoyed soaking in the hot tub, drinking, eating edibles, and dancing together. There was also romance and love in comfort between Mabel and Audre.
The comfort trait continues when Queenie also sent a care package to Audre with a letter from Neri, letting her know that she’s now ok despite how difficult her move to Tobago with her homophobic aunt,She has now found a new family that is accepting of her.
The characters enjoying life is also shown when Mabel along with her family and Audre went to Coney island, an amusement park, to finally meet Afua.
Gemini
Symbol: Twins; dual personalities

Modality: Mutable
Planet: Mercury; Planet of Communication
Period: May 21 - June 20
Traits: impatient, fast talkers, fast thinkers, adaptable, innovative, independent, communicative, creative, unreliable (#ASTR1004! Pt2, 2020), (Rae, 2017).
Poem
The Gemini planet, Mercury (which is named after the god of communication) and also Gemini’s trait of needing to be stimulated by knowledge is made reference to in the lines “mercury mind silver tongue with books under her arm from each section her mind can’t drink enough. it fly low on every possibility wants to know all of the knowledges” and “and read some more and remembers the ways that spirit flies”
There’s also a reference to the Gemini symbol, the twins and also a reference to the gemini trait of dual personality and the Mutable modality which is their ability to change in the lines “shape-shifting seamless through duality and she one with her thoughts she whole and two parts”(PETRUS, 2020).
Chapter
The chapter shows its Gemini traits and their Mutable modality with the unexpected change of Afua and Mabel when they transformed into butterflies. Choosing a butterfly for the transformation also makes reference to the wind element of Gemini and the Gemini trait that represents freedom.
